Who will be the first to create God? (yikes)

2 August 2023 | Issue #8

Happy August (yeah, it's August already). As many of us wind down our summer and we start to get distracted by football – both kinds – there is still plenty going on in the world of AI and design.

It sounds like MAICON was a huge success (more below), and it was well timed with the release of the Gartner AI Hype Cycle.

The Hype Cycle shows that generative AI is currently almost at the top of the Peak of Inflated Expectations. This means we're probably minutes away from the backlash as it descends down toward the Trough of Disillusionment.

The reality is that generative AI will continue to be a disruptive force across many creative industries.

I dig into the Hype Cycle a bit more in my most recent blog post.

NEW RESOURCES FOR YOU

The thing to remember about business leaders is they are driven by metrics. In a way, we're all driven by metrics (how much money did you make last month, what are your bills this month?). But in business, leaders are responsible for looking at those same questions on a much larger scale.

Many do not have the luxury of incorporating qualitative factors.

If you're a designer, it's harder to present quantitative data to show your value.

Harder, but not impossible.

In this blog post, I outline some stats that you can pre-emptively show to your leadership to show how the work you provide adds value to the business.

At some point, they'll have to cut costs. They won't come to you when they're planning these cuts. Showing your quantitative value ahead of time could be the difference between a layoff and a promotion. Get ahead of this now.

NEWS AT THE INTERSECTION OF MARKETING, DESIGN, & AI

Who Will be the First to Create God?

Yikes. That's a headline. Data scientist extrordinaire, Christopher Penn, delivered an opening morning keynote for this year's MAICON (marketing AI conference).

  • Where does ethics sit within the new AI landcape? Compliance sits just one step above illegal. Is that the best thing?
  • In some ways, AI will help equalize things because people will be able to get the same service ro product once it's automated. But not every company is starting at the same point.

If You Haven’t Lost at Least 3 Nights of Sleep Thinking about AI, Then You Don’t Fully Understand AI.

Another "yikes" headline! This one is from a recap Paul Roetzer (founder of the Marketing AI Institute) wrote about a recent article

  • If AIs get very good at making accurate models of the world, they may notice that they’re able to do dangerous things right after being booted up. They might understand that they are being red-teamed for risk, and hide the full extent of their capabilities.
  • People want to promote the good that AI can offer, but there are a lot of potential downfalls.

OpenAI Quietly Shuts Down Its AI Detection Tool

OpenAI has decided to pull the plug on its AI detection tool, AI Classifier, due to its low accuracy rate.

  • The tool, which was designed to detect if a piece of content was generated by AI, was decommissioned because it couldn't effectively perform its intended function.
  • OpenAI is now focusing on incorporating feedback and researching more effective provenance techniques for text, with a commitment to develop mechanisms that enable users to understand if audio or visual content is AI-generated.
  • So even OpenAI can't detect what OpenAI is creating. This is not good.

Also, I'm now offering a 15-minute one-on-one to help you set up your generative AI systems. If you don't know where to get started, let's chat!

Next week I'm on vacation, so I don't know if there will be a new issue. But if there is, I'll be sure it's not as scary as this one.
